Meet the extraordinary participants of ‘The Deccan Cliffhanger’

GianT Starkenn- The Deccan CliffHanger, RAAM
If we had to rank the overall impact that an event has, The Deccan Cliffhanger’ would sit right at the top. Yes, it was not a big event. Yes, it didn’t enjoy flashlights of camera wielding scribes waiting to click you on the finish line. Yes, it genuinely interested very few sports enthusiasts & even a lesser number of sports professionals. But, talk about COURAGE and the event managed to sprinkle it in bucket-loads. The Deccan Cliffhanger converted a regular weekend into a awe-inspiring one.

23 cyclists shelled out all their energy in their quest to finish off the marathon 400 mile race circuit in under 34 hours. The race was an open demonstration of human endurance being pushed to the limit. With the adrenaline pumping so high and the cyclists performing like people possessed, it came as no surprise when every participating individual and team finished the race in less than 31 hours, way less than the stipulated maximum time limit.
It’s a great pleasure to introduce you with the finishers of India Inspired organized Giant Starkenn’s The Deccan Cliffhanger and you can congratulate them all on our facebook page :https://www.facebook.com/events/487623318019025/?source=1

The Deccan Cliffhanger – India’s qualifier event for Race Across America (RAAM)

Marathoners are tough! Beginning their quest at quite a young age, the seasoned marathoners survive some of the most endurance testing marathons across the world. And, when they feel thirstier, these marathoners try to quench it with some ultra marathon events. For endurance loving cyclists, RAAM (Race across America) is the culmination of all the quests of the ultimate ultra marathon.

Organised by Inspire India, Giant Starkenn’s The Deccan Cliffhanger, a qualifying event for RAAM, conducted on the 22nd & 23rd of February 2014, was a first of its kind event in India. Starting in Pune and spanning more than 400 miles, the race circuit whirl winds through some of the most breath taking stretches such as Anshi Forest/ Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra & through similarly blissful places in Goa, to end at Miramar Beach, Panjim – the capital of Goa. The total uphill climb on the circuit of about 4200 meters made the race even more challenging.

(Do check out the route map here: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/247823169)
23 cyclists across different race types (solo/ team relay) and age groups took part in the race. Looking at the professionalism demonstrated by the participating cyclists, we believe that soon young children in India will also start looking up at Cycling as a career choice. All the race types were to be finished under 32 hours. The toast of the event were the woman cyclists Divya Tate, Ila Patil, Kalyani Chordiya, Shusanah Pillinger) who, we firmly believe, are great inspirations for lots of young girls aspiring to get into professional sports.

We would soon bring you the detailed coverage on the participants of the race, the winners and the stories of a few of them.

About Race Across America
RAAM, standing for Race Across America, is an ultra marathon bicycling event held in the United States of America every year. The RAAM circuit connects the west coast of America with the east coast stretching some 3000 miles. What makes this race extremely challenging is the fact that it is a non-stop event and hence activities such as sleeping & rest breaks are also considered in the final time. This takes away the liberty of a adequate sleep away from the bicyclists. The winners of the event are found to average 1.5 hours of daily sleep and finish the race in a little over 9 days.
